Definitions

Ally: someone who uses their privilege to learn from, listen to, and amplify the voices of marginalized communities.

Diversity: the property of a population to contain individuals of different social identities. Diversity is a measurement of a group, rather than an individual.

Equity: an acknowledgement of systemic barriers and privileges, and in response, a commitment to providing equal access to hiring, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.

Inclusivity: a culture where people of all identities feel equally welcomed and celebrated. This necessitates conscious, committed efforts to center, listen to, and celebrate minority and underrepresented groups.

Intersectionality: the concept that no system of oppression is separable from another. All social identities and systemsof oppressions interact and intersect.

Pronouns: the language used to refer to others in third person. Pronouns do not necessarily represent or denote gender, but she/her and he/him pronouns have historically been used to uphold the gender binary. Disclosing pronouns is one way to be an ally to gender-diverse people and dismantle a culture of assuming pronouns and potentially misgendering people.

Social Identity – an identity held by an individual based on group inclusion and membership. A different social identity may feel more salient in different contexts, but no social identity is separable from another.

Land Acknowledgement

Pure Lithium acknowledges that we are located on land stolen from the First Nations of Massachusetts, the Massa-adchu-es-et and Pawtucket Peoples past and present. We acknowledge the violence and injustice committed and still being committed against all Indigenous People. With gratitude, we honor the land itself and the stewardship efforts of the First Nations of Massachusetts. We urge our collaborators and supports to be allies to Indigenous Peoples in the fight for justice, de-colonialization, and environmental restoration.
